What is Dermabrasion?
Dermabrasion is a procedure in which Dr. Diaz reduce scars and wrinkles by sanding them with a small hand-held tool.
How does the treatment work?
Local anesthesia is injected into the area before treatment begins. Dr. Diaz gently scrapes away the top layers of the skin using an electrical instrument. The wheel at the end of the instrument spins rapidly as it moves over the area. Once the treatment is over, your skin will be protected with a healing gel.
How many treatments are required?
It is not uncommon for the procedure to be performed multiple times or in stages, especially when scarring is deep or there is a large area of skin being treated.
Is Dermabrasion safe?
Dermabrasion is safe; however, it does have a few risks. Treated skin can appear darker or lighter than the surrounding skin. This can be resolved, but sometimes it is permanent. Also, in rare cases the scarring is worsened by the procedure, or the procedure can cause new scarring to occur.
Are there any possible side effects?
Following the treatment you will probably experience a tingling, burning or aching sensation. Your face will be red and swollen for a few days. The redness fades to pink until the natural pigment returns.
Will there be any downtime?
There will be about ten days of downtime. Eating and talking may be difficult following treatment. Any pain can be controlled with medications prescribed by Dr. Diaz. Swelling will subside in a few days, and you can return to your normal routine in two weeks.
What are the benefits of Dermabrasion?
Dermabrasion can be used after surgery to make scars less noticeable. Tattoos and wrinkles can also be treated with Dermabrasion. Other treatments, such as chemical peels, use a caustic solution.
What are the results?
Once the skin is healed and color has returned, new skin should appear healthier and younger. Dramatic improvements can occur, but it will take time before final results are seen.
What can be expected post-treatment?
Immediately after the treatment, you can expect some pain in the form of tingling, burning, aching or swelling. An itchy scab will form and once it falls off, a new layer of skin will appear. This new layer of skin can be pink for up to three months. If the treated area does not heal or gets worse, call your physician immediately.
How soon will results appear?
Results take time to appear.
What conditions respond best to this treatment?
Those who have acne scars but do not currently have acne usually respond well to the treatment. Fair colored skin tones respond better than darker skin tones.
Who should avoid Dermabrasion?
Sometimes darker skin toned patients have complications with Dermabrasion and become permanently discolored or blotchy after treatment. Patients who have allergic rashes or other skin reactions may not be good candidates for Dermabrasion.
Instructions prior to treatment:
Prepare for the length of time needed for recovery, and don’t schedule any major events in the next week. Follow all instructions DR. Diaz gives on eating, drinking, smoking and taking medications.
Instructions for after treatment: Let Dr. Diaz know if any persistent redness lasts for too long or if any yellow crusting develops. Apply a strong sunscreen, at least SPF 45, to your face each everyday.
